Aim
Collect as many different foods as possible making sure you have a balanced meal on your dinner plate
How to Play
Before starting, discuss the food groups and why each of them are important
-
Fats and sugars: Too much can cause heart problems. Proteins = Good for growth. Carbohydrates = Gives you energy. Fruits and vegetables = Good for the health of your body. Fibre = Good for digestion. Dairy = Good for strong bones
-
Begin by shouting out a scenario, for example, “I need stronger bones” for diary, or “I need more energy” for carbohydrates
-
Each group must then shout out the food group that they need to solve this and an example of a food in that food group
-
Once a group has got both right they can then begin collecting it from the supermarket and returning it to their dinner plate
-
The group must carry any food they collect on their throw down disc with each member holding the throw down disc and balancing the food on top
-
The children keep guessing until all groups are collecting food. Once the relevant hula hoop is empty all group must return to the middle
-
Repeat with a different scenario for each food group
-
The Playgame is complete when the supermarket is empty
After finishing, ask each group to go to their dinner plate and create a balanced meal each from the food they have collected

Use different scenarios
*
Ask the children to play in groups of five children -
Ask a child to hold a small sized ball in each hand and play without dropping them - to restrict the resources
*
Blindfold one member of a group - to restrict the resources*
Ask a group of three to play the game all standing inside one hula hoop at all times - to restrict the space -
Specify that a group need only shout out the food group and not an example food - to reduce the number of decisions that need to be made
-
Why do you have that much protein on your plate?
*
How does it feel to be healthy? -
I can evaluate and change what worked and what did not when trying to carry multiple objects at once
*
I know when other people need my support and I think about what they need from me*
I can evaluate the risk verses the reward of an action*
I can collaborate effectively with others
