Aim
Collect food from the market and make a balanced meal on your dinner table
How to Play
Before starting, discuss with the children the different food groups, what types of foods are in each group, which ones you need most of and what you need each one for
-
Once the children know that a balanced diet means more protein and fruit and vegetables than carbohydrates and fibre and then a small amount of fats and sugars ask them to go and sit at their dinner tables
-
On the word go, each group must move to the market and place food onto their dinner plates
-
Each child must have at least one hand on their dinner plate at all times
-
Children must transport all food from the market to their dinner table on their dinner plate and not touch the food with their hands
-
Once every group has collected what they think is a balanced meal and their is no more food in the market go round as a large group, all together, visiting each group’s dinner table
-
When you arrive at a group’s dinner table, that group must tell you which foods they have and why it is balanced
-
The Playgame is complete when every group’s hula hoop has been visited

-
Ask the children to come up with a different balance of food but that is still healthy
*
Give each group of four children one dinner plate to carry food on -
Ask a child to hold a small sized ball in each hand and play without dropping them - to restrict the resources
*
Blindfold one member of a group - to restrict the resources*
Ask a group of three to play the game all standing inside one hula hoop at all times - to restrict the space -
Specify that a child can only collect fruit, vegetables or carbohydrates - to reduce the possible options
-
What would happen if you increased the amount of fat on your plate?
*
How does it feel to be healthy? -
I can express my ideas to others
*
I know how I can stay balanced whilst moving*
I know what I need to be healthy*
I can listen to and work with others
